Rain Likely From July 5: MeT Office Forecast For Kashmir Valley

Srinagar- As Jammu and Kashmir braces for light to moderate rainfall from July 5 onwards, several areas across the region experienced a slight drop in temperatures on Wednesday, offering relief from the intense heat wave that gripped the Valley over the past week. According to the Meteorological Department, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a maximum temperature of 32.8°C, down from 34.2°C a day earlier. Qazigund recorded 29.2°C, while Pahalgam saw a pleasant 27.2°C. Kupwara, Kokernag, and Gulmarg registered maximum temperatures of 34.4°C, 30.0°C, and 22.8°C, respectively. In the Jammu division, temperatures remained below normal, with Jammu city logging a day temperature of 32.9°C. Katra recorded 31.0°C, Bhaderwah 30.6°C, Banihal 27.3°C, and Batote 26.5°C. Rain Deficit in Several Areas As per the seasonal rainfall data compiled by the local Meteorological Department, three stations -- Kishtwar, Kulgam, and Bandipora -- recorded large rainfall deficits ranging between 60% to 99% from June 1 to July 2, 2025. Several other districts including Srinagar, Shopian, Poonch, Kupwara, Ganderbal, Doda, Baramulla, Budgam, and Anantnag reported rainfall deficits between 20% to 59%. In contrast, Rajouri, Reasi, and Samba witnessed large excess rainfall. Rajouri received 187.1 mm of rain against the normal 94.1 mm, Samba logged 155 mm against the usual 88.4 mm, and Reasi recorded a significant 312.4 mm against the average 151 mm. Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, said that from July 5 to July 7, generally cloudy skies with intermittent light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers are expected at many places. "A few areas, particularly in the Jammu division, may experience intense showers and heavy rainfall," he added. From July 8 to July 10, brief spells of rain are expected at scattered locations across the Union Territory. The MeT has also issued an advisory warning of flash floods at vulnerable spots, as well as the possibility of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in hilly areas. "A rise in water levels in rivers, streams, and local Nalas, along with waterlogging in some low-lying areas, is expected between July 5 and 7," the advisory said. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially in flood-prone and landslide-vulnerable zones.
