JAMMU, June 7: Along with other parts of the country, hundreds of muslims offered prayers across the Jammu region as they celebrated Eid-ul-Adha, here today with deep religious devotion and a joyful spirit. Click here to watch video Large crowds gathered at mosques and Eidgahs to offer special prayers across the ten districts of the region, with the largest congregation offering namaz at the Eidgah, near Residency Road in Jammu city. Other smaller congregations were held at various mosques throughout Jammu, including the Mecca Masjid in Bhatindi. Elaborate security arrangements were made at the Eidgah and other places to ensure peaceful celebration. Several prominent persons and representatives of various political as well as social organizations also visited the Jammu Eidgah for extending Eid greetings to muslim brethren. Following the Eid prayers, people performed the traditional sacrifice of animals such as sheep and goats, commemorating the faith and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim. While elders exchanged warm Eid hugs and heartfelt greetings, children, dressed in new clothes, visited relatives to seek blessings. The celebrations are set to continue till Monday, with families planning visits, feasts, and charitable acts over the next two days. Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the festival of sacrifice, holds significant religious and cultural importance among muslims worldwide. The festival remembers the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail, when God ordered him to do so. The festival is also called Bakr Eid because believers sacrifice an animal, usually a goat, to mark the event. Reports said that Eid prayers were also held across the mosques in Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Kathua and Samba.
