CHENNAI: After the arrest of five policemen in connection with the custodial death of Ajith Kumar, 27, a temple security guard in Thiruppuvanam in Sivagangai, Sivagangai Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat has been placed on compulsory wait on the orders of the Director General of Police and Head of Police Force Shankar Jiwal with immediate effect on Tuesday. In place of Rawat, G Chandeesh, Ramanathapuram SP will hold additional charge of Sivagangai SP.It may be recalled that on June 27, Ajith Kumar, 27, a security guard at Bathrakaliamman temple in Madapuram near Tiruppuvanam in Sivagangai district, was picked up as a suspect on Friday in connection with a gold jewellery theft case. A woman, Nikitha, and her elderly mother, Sivagami, who visited the temple filed a complaint with the Tiruppuvanam police after 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery and some cash were missing from their car. Ajith Kumar and his younger brother Naveen Kumar were among five suspects being questioned in the case. However, the next day, Ajith Kumar's health is said to have deteriorated and he was declared dead when taken to a hospital by the police.After family members of Ajith Kumar protested alleging custodial torture, six policemen were initially suspended. Following preliminary findings of the post mortem examination released on Monday, the case was reclassified as murder, and an FIR was filed at Tiruppuvanam police station under Section 196(2)(a) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Cr No 303/2025. Subsequently, five police personnel were arrested and later remanded in judicial custody till July 15.A shocking video has emerged on Tuesday which shows police personnel assaulting the temple security guard Ajith Kumar during the interrogation in the gold jewellery theft case near the temple where the theft occurred. The cops standing around Ajith Kumar, who is sitting on the ground, can be clearly seen hitting him with a pipe or lathi.Meanwhile, family members of the five arrested policemen are holding a dharna protest at Thiruppuvanam police station on Tuesday stating that the policemen were only carrying out their duty on the orders of higher ups but were being punished.
