Birendra Sahu, a Jarwahi village resident in Dongargarh tehsil, got engaged to 24-year-old Jyoti Sahu. An engagement ceremony in the Rajnandgaon district of Chattisgarh is in the headlines due to a noble initiative undertaken by the bride and groom. According to Local 18 Chhattisgarh, at this wedding, both partners gifted helmets to each other, thus encouraging the importance of road safety norms. In this ceremony, Birendra Sahu, a Jarwahi village resident in Dongargarh tehsil, got engaged to 24-year-old Jyoti Sahu. Jyoti is a resident of Kariatola village in Dongargaon town. After all the engagement rituals were finished, the couple gave an awareness message about road safety to the guests present at the wedding. This was a unique wedding ritual for the guests. Birendra Sahu, the groom, talked about what encouraged him to perform this custom at his wedding. According to him, his father Panchram Sahu was the secretary of Gram Panchayat Kalkasa. Birendra remembered that one day, his father was returning home by bike after work. His father suffered a serious head injury because of not wearing a helmet when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. Due to this wound, his father died in January 2022. Since the demise of Panchram Sahu, his family members have made it a point to make people aware of the importance of wearing helmets. To make their initiative reach a large number of people, they also wore helmets in their engagement and wedding ceremonies. Birendra Sahu and his family members have also started a campaign by the name of Helmet Sangwari (Helmet Friend). Under this campaign, the people are given and taught the importance of wearing helmets. Till now, they have distributed helmets to more than 1000 people. Birendra Sahu's brother Dharmendra Sahu has distributed these helmets to the people for free. According to a report, the insurance amount that Panchram Sahu's family got after his demise was used to purchase and distribute helmets to the people. Dharmendra said in the interview that he and his brothers have decided to contribute 20 percent toward spreading awareness and distributing helmets to the people in their community. He wants to ensure that there are no more deaths due to the injuries in the road accidents.
