Breach Candy residents seek to restore Tata Garden, launch online petition | Mumbai News - Times of India

Mumbai: Residents of Breach Candy have launched an online petition (https://www.change.org/p/let-tata-garden-bloom-again-as-ratan-tata-garden) urging the Tata Group to adopt and restore the erstwhile Tata Garden -- which was demolished for the construction of the Mumbai coastal road. In an appeal, locals are requesting the Tata Group to step in as patrons and help rejuvenate the garden. Rajesh Dahiya, who has started the petition and is also a Breach Candy resident said that they propose renaming it "Ratan Tata Garden" in honour of the industrialist's legacy of humility and public service. The petition, which has garnered over 672 verified signatures in a day on Monday. Currently the original Tata Gardens is three broken pieces of land with the interchanger entry/exits going in between it. The total area of Tata gardens when it existed in totality was 1.06 acres, approximately 45000 sq. feet."Tata Garden, not just a garden, but a part of our identity. A taxi driver needed no address, just two words: Tata Garden. With its canopied shade, gentle walking tracks, stone benches warmed by the sun, and a cool breeze through the leaves, Tata Garden gave us what the rest of the city often forgot: space to breathe. The Coastal Road interchange, meant to ease traffic, unfortunately, sliced Tata Garden in two. We supported development but came together and requested authorities to retain the hertage to its best form," stated the petition adding that Tata Gardens, once again, needs a parent, someone to nurture and provide affectionate care to each piece of green in this green lung of Mumbai's city. The BMC in turn said that there are already large parcels of public open spaces being developed along the Mumbai coastal road. "These open spaces would stretch from Nepensea road to the Worli exit of the coastal road," said the official.
