Bhubaneswar: Odisha is bracing for a flood in its northern districts after heavy rain in Jharkhand and several parts of the state over the last 24 hours forced Subarnarekha, Budhabalanga and Jalaka rivers to swell, the state's water resources department said on Sunday. A low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has caused widespread rainfall, increasing water levels in the rivers. Sources said water level at Subarnarekha river crossed the danger mark at Rajghat in Balasore district and is flowing at 9.86 metres against the danger mark of 9.45m.The IMD has issued a warning for heavy rain to continue in most parts of Odisha till July 5. In response to the looming threat, the department has activated its 24x7 flood control room at Secha Sadan in Bhubaneswar. The Balasore district collector has been alerted to relocate people from low-lying areas to higher ground and to carry out necessary relief operations, official sources said."To support field-level monitoring and management of a possible flood situation, a chief engineer and a superintendent engineer from the water resources department have been urgently dispatched to Balasore," read an official statement.Several places in Mayurbhanj district recorded extremely heavy rainfall, with Chandua receiving 320 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, followed by 250 mm at Suleipada, 249 mm at Saraskana, 198 mm at Bangiriposi, and 180 mm at Shamakhunta.
