New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) reviewed compliance with its previous directives concerning aircraft noise pollution at Delhi's IGI Airport. The Society for Protection of Culture Heritage Environment Traditions and Promotion of National Awareness previously raised issues about aircraft noise during night operations. They highlighted that between July 2024 and Dec 2024, over 50% of flights used Runway 29/11, affecting Vasant Kunj residents. While the tribunal acknowledged noise monitoring and display, it did not address the runway usage concern.The order, released on June 28, referenced a previous directive from March 21, 2024. The airport claimed to provide aircraft noise monitoring data on its website, though the applicant contested this information. "We also tried to open the website mentioned by Respondent 9 (airport) but could not find it convenient to open the required information with regard to aircraft noise level and monitoring as claimed by Respondent 9. Hence, we direct Respondent 9 to display aircraft noise level on a monthly basis on the website in such a manner that it may conveniently be available to everyone who is interested to find out the said information and this shall be done within 30 days from today," stated NGT bench, led by Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastav.The tribunal's recent order confirmed that Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) fulfilled requirements by displaying daily noise data online.The airport confirmed its website now displays aircraft noise data from Noise Monitoring Terminals. "Thus, we find that the direction issued by the Tribunal has been complied with... So far as the allegation of the Applicant in respect of use of Runway 29/11 is concerned, there was no separate specific direction of the Tribunal in this regard. In view of the above, we find that no further order in this execution application is required," the bench concluded.The airport website specifies maximum permissible noise levels: 105 dB (A) during daytime and 95 dB (A) at night.
