Pune: In a joint operation with the Military Intelligence (MI) of the Southern Command, Ahilyanagar police on Friday arrested three Bangladesh nationals for illegally staying in the Pokhardi industrial zone for the last two years.The police and the MI are searching for an agent named 'Pappu', who has been allegedly facilitating illegal immigrants from the India-Bangladesh border for the last few years. The arrested suspects managed to obtain Aadhaar and PAN cards at a centre in Thane district."We are investigating how they managed to make such original-looking documents. With these documents, they could open their bank accounts. We are trying to establish how these immigrants come in contact with the local industries where they have been working for the last few months," said senior inspector Manik Chaudhari from the MIDC police station, where an FIR has been lodged.So far, the police and MI have established that the arrested suspects worked as labourers at a local construction site. The accused have been identified as Jahangir Abutaher Sheikh (34), Hanif Abdul Khalid Sheikh (40) and Musharraf Sheikh (40) -- all natives of Hajiganj, Chattogram, Bangladesh.Joint interrogation is currently underway to ascertain any links to anti-national elements (ANEs) or wider networks of illegal immigration. "Our investigation has so far established that they did not visit any defence establishment in Ahilyanagar. We are investigating their motive behind illegally staying in the state," added Chaudhari.Explaining the modus operandi, a senior police officer said, "We came to know that the agents have been operating from small towns and cities of Maharashtra and other states in bringing illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. They have established their network in Kolkata and other towns across the country. Once they manage to bring them to India, these illegal immigrants stay for a few weeks in Kolkata and then move to other cities in the country.""These agents, with the help of their network in towns and cities, manage to secure their basic documents. Within a few months, they create Aadhaar and PAN cards for the immigrants. They charge a hefty amount from these immigrants," added the officer.
