Puri, June 27 (UNI) The dreams of lakhs of devotees who thronged Puri to witness the grand Rath Yatra were left shattered today, as none of the three chariots could cover even half of the three-kilometre-long Badadanda stretch. Despite enduring intermittent rain, thousands of devotees remained on Badadanda for hours, eagerly waiting for the opportunity to pull the sacred chariots. However, their hopes were dashed as the day ended without success. The pulling of the chariots was suspended after the Nandighosh Ratha of Lord Jagannath moved only 10 metres, in adherence to tradition. A senior servitor said the rituals proceeded smoothly until the pulling of the first chariot -- Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra -- began at around 4:10 PM. Unfortunately, the chariot skidded off track and veered into a corner. It took nearly 90 minutes to realign it. However, before resuming the journey, Taladhwaja chariot again went out of control, blocking the movement of the following chariot, Darpadalan of Devi Subhadra. Despite efforts under floodlights, the administration was unable to move the chariots any further. Eventually, the pulling was suspended for the day at around 8 PM and is scheduled to resume at 9:30 AM tomorrow, said Shree Jagannath Temple Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhi. By the time pulling was halted, the Taladhwaja chariot had halted near Balagandi, the Darpadalan near the municipal market, and the Nandighosh near the Lion's Gate. Earlier in the morning, the priests performed the daily rituals of the deities, including Mangala Arati, Mailum, Tadapa Lagi, Abakasha, Surya Puja, Rosa Homa, and the offering of Khichdi Bhog. At 10:20 AM, the ceremonial Dhadi Pahandi (sequential procession) began. Daita servitors escorted Lord Balabhadra to the Taladhwaja, Devi Subhadra to the Darpadalan, and Lord Jagannath to the Nandighosh chariot, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of ghantas, mridangas, conch blowing, and graceful Odissi dancers leading the way. Devotees erupted in ecstatic chants of "Haribol" and "Jai Jagannath," while women raised ululations as the deities emerged from the Simhadwar in full divine splendour. Lord Jagannath, with his swinging floral tiara, captivated the crowd during his majestic Pahandi. Despite being drenched in rain, the devotees jostled for a glimpse of Mahaprabhu Jagannath's Pahandi to the Nandighosh chariot, which concluded at 12:30 PM. Later, Shankaracharya of Puri Gobardhan Peeth, Swami Neeschalananda Saraswati, arrived with his disciples and offered prayers to the divine Trinity on their respective chariots. Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingh Deb then arrived at the festival site in a beautifully decorated palanquin at 2:35 PM and performed the sacred Chhera Pahanra -- the ritual sweeping around the deities with a golden broom -- on all three chariots. The ritual concluded by 3:40 PM. Following this, servitors dismantled the Charamala (ladders) and attached wooden horses to the Taladhwaja chariot. At 4:10 PM, devotees were finally allowed to begin pulling it. Although Devi Subhadra's chariot, Darpadalan, began its journey, it could not proceed as Taladhwaja remained stalled in front.
