Hisar: The Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) campus remained tense as the ongoing student protest entered its 17th day on Thursday, with students alleging betrayal by the govt and inhumane treatment by the university administration. Some students claimed that the administration has cut off water and food supplies to girls' hostels, and ordered students to vacate the premises. Despite a reported agreement with the govt on June 25 regarding the re-conduct of examinations, the university declared some M.Sc. girl students as "failed" on its portal -- a move seen as punitive, since results are typically released four to five months after exams. Students made it clear that the protest would only end upon receiving written assurances fulfilling their demands. Although students earlier announced plans to block all four gates of the university on Friday, the 18th day of the agitation, this decision has now been postponed. Protesters have given the govt and administration time until July 1 to provide written assurances on their demands. If no action is taken, they have warned that the university will be completely shut down starting July 2. Addressing mediapersons, several girl students alleged that water supply had been disrupted in their hostels for the past two to three days. On Thursday morning, hostel wardens informed them that the semester was over and they should vacate the premises. Later, they were told that the hostel mess would also be shut down. Govt assurances delayed, only partial action takenStudents reported that SDM Jyoti Mittal and a representative named Hariom Pandit, acting on behalf of the education minister, assured them on Wednesday that all demands -- including placing the vice chancellor on six months' leave -- were accepted. They were told to announce the development in a press conference, after which they would receive written confirmation within two hours, along with a joint press conference from two ministers. However, no such written assurance was provided. Instead, only one order was issued, reassigning the charge of the Director of Student Welfare to the Dean of Agriculture College. VC press note withdrawn, then reissuedOn Wednesday, just before students addressed the media, the university administration issued a press note under vice chancellor B.R. Kamboj, stating that entrance exams would be held on June 28. That press note was abruptly withdrawn, only to be reissued on Thursday -- indicating that the Vice Chancellor has not been removed, contrary to what was assured.
