Panaji: A District Monitoring Committee on Accessible Elections (DMCAE) to implement the Election Commission's plan for inclusive voting, especially for persons with disabilities (PwDs) has been formed. Acting on the commission's May 8 directive, the committee will work to identify and enrol PwDs not on the electoral roll and maintain detailed data, including the nature of their disabilities and their polling station details, said Ankit Yadav, Collector and District Election Officer of North Goa. In addition to the officials on the 8-member committee, the others are member of Goa State Advisory Board for Disability and senior journalist Prakash Kamat and Mahadev Sawant from the office of commissioner for persons with disabilities. The committee will focus on making polling stations barrier-free and launching awareness campaigns tailored to PwDs. It will also conduct special enrolment camps and ensure election staff receive training on PwD rights. The committee will meet regularly, review its work quarterly, and report to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). It will consider feedback from advisory bodies like the ACCAE (Accessible and Inclusive Elections Core Committee). Workshops will also be held to train Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to improve PwD participation. The committee will help appoint District Icons among PwDs to promote electoral inclusion.
