Guwahati: Mystery surrounds the death of 25-year-old law intern Namrata Bora from Assam's Golaghat district, who reportedly died in an alleged car accident while travelling to Shillong near Nongpoh in Meghalaya in the early hours of Wednesday. Her family has refused to accept the incident as a mere road accident and has lodged an FIR demanding a thorough investigation. Namrata, a law student living on rent at Guwahati's Rukminigaon, had travelled to Shillong with AIUDF youth leader Anayatul Wadud -- son of an AIUDF MLA -- along with Mriganka Bora, Pragya Dihingia, and Gayatri Bora. The accident occurred at around 4:15am in Meghalaya's Changbangla area in Ri-Bhoi district. While her friends sustained minor injuries, Namrata succumbed to her wounds at Nongpoh Civil Hospital. Her brother, Rishabhananda Bora, has alleged foul play, filing a complaint at Nongpoh police station and naming all four companions as suspects. The family members also registered an FIR at Dispur police station, questioning why Anayatul and Gayatri fled the scene while others rushed Namrata to the hospital.Meghalaya police conducted a post-mortem at Nongpoh Civil Hospital before handing over Namrata's body to her family. Her father, Ramen Bora, said, "On Tuesday, she called from her room, and on Wednesday morning, I received a call saying that she was in an accident and died while returning from Shillong." "When I contacted Mriganka, he handed the phone to Pragya, who said they had gone to see the sunrise when a vehicle hit them while overtaking another car. They claimed Namrata was critically injured and admitted to the hospital," the father said. However, he pointed out discrepancies in their account and the driver's statement. Claiming the incident a conspiracy, Bora said, "When Namrata left the room, she took a regular phone instead of her iPhone. But why did she leave her iPhone behind if she was going to watch the sunrise? Moreover, she went out wearing casual clothes instead of the usual attire she wears when going out. My daughter is particular about what she wears when she goes out. Therefore, I am seeking a proper investigation into the incident." Meanwhile, police have detained Namrata's friends for questioning in connection with the case.
