Guwahati: Assam has witnessed a significant increase in malaria cases after rain wreaked havoc in the state, last week.Lower Assam districts, particularly forest areas bordering Bhutan, have seen a surge in malaria cases since the last week of May, when widespread rain began across the northeastern region and Assam, according to officials. However, the number of deaths has remained at two, which were reported in April from Kokrajhar.Data from the state programme office stated that so far this year Kokrajhar has reported the highest number of malaria cases at 802, followed by Chirang with 262 cases - both districts situated along the Bhutan border and are located within the Bodoland Territorial Council areas of lower Assam. Baksa and Udalguri districts, also in the BTC areas, have reported the third and fourth highest cases, with 20 and 12 respectively. Lower Assam's Bongaigaon has also recorded 12 cases.Several other districts in the state have reported malaria cases, but the numbers have remained below 10 in each. Last year, Kokrajhar had reported over 3,000 cases, the highest among all districts. "June is considered the peak time for malaria cases, but it can extend up to July. Since this year, the monsoon arrived almost a fortnight ahead of the scheduled time, it may have contributed to a surge in malaria cases in later part of May itself," a senior health department official said.Fogging and distribution of medicated mosquito nets have commenced by the administration and health authorities."Many forest areas where villages have sprung up are actually not meant for human settlement. Many families have encroached upon forest areas and settled there, facing frequent mosquito bites. A large number of people do not use mosquito nets," the official added.Door-to-door surveillance has begun in the affected districts to detect malaria cases, and health department officials observed that there have been numerous instances where patients have tested positive for malaria, but do not display symptoms."We are not taking any risks. When one person is found infected with malaria, the entire family is being tested," the official said.
