Bengaluru: A 14-year-old girl from Kerala has gone missing during a family trek in the Chandradrona hill range in Karnataka. An intensive search operation is underway for over 24 hours. The girl, identified as Sri Nanda, a Class 10 student, was hiking with around 40 relatives when she disappeared on April 7. Teen goes missing during trek According to police, she was last seen around 5:30 pm as darkness began to set in. Family members initially searched for her but failed to locate her. A formal complaint was filed next day by her relative, Shashikumar K G, a resident of Kerala's Palakkad district. Police teams launched a large-scale search in the difficult terrain of the hills, including deep ghat sections and steep slopes. Rescue teams are using ropes to navigate inaccessible areas, while drone surveillance is being deployed, including during night operations. A Kerala police official has also joined the efforts to assist in the search. The girl was last seen in a video taken during the trek with a family member. There has been no trace of her so far. The case comes days after another incident involving a Kerala-based IT professional, GS Sharanya, who went missing for four days while trekking in Thadiyandamol hills in Karnataka's Kodagu. She survived in a forest on just water before being rescued. Government plans stricter rules Following these incidents, the Karnataka government is considering stricter safety measures for trekking. Officials are working on a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), including a temporary mobile tracking system for trekkers, mandatory wireless communication tools for guides and accountability measures for trek leaders. Plans for group insurance coverage are also being explored.
