Bengaluru: Karnataka has registered a significant decline in groundwater usage along with a notable increase in annual recharge capacity, reflecting the impact of sustained conservation efforts and favourable rainfall, Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology Minister N. S. Boseraju said on Wednesday. Releasing the 2025 Groundwater Assessment Report at Vikas Soudha, the Minister attributed the improvement to focused policy interventions and large-scale water conservation initiatives undertaken over the past two years under Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. According to the report, overall groundwater extraction declined from 68.44% in 2024 to 66.49% in 2025, indicating more sustainable usage patterns. At the same time, annual groundwater recharge capacity increased from 18.74 billion cubic metres (BCM) to 19.28 BCM. Annual extractable groundwater resources also rose from 16.88 BCM to 17.41 BCM. "This simultaneous reduction in usage and increase in recharge reflects our government's commitment to long-term water sustainability," Boseraju said. A key driver of this improvement has been the expansion of water conservation structures across the State. Recharge through such structures rose by 29.11%, from 0.81 BCM in 2024 to 1.04 BCM in 2025. The number of conservation works also saw a sharp increase, from 3.15 lakh to 3.94 lakh during the same period. The report highlights improvements in groundwater status across 11 taluks, with several regions moving into safer categories. Notably, Chamarajanagar taluk improved from "over-exploited" to "critical". Taluks such as Athani, Channapatna, Molakalmuru, Ranebennur, Savanur and Shiggaon transitioned from "semi-critical" to "safe". Domestic groundwater dependence also declined marginally by 0.58%, dropping from 1,21,731 hectare-metres in 2024 to 1,21,023 hectare-metres in 2025. Officials attributed this to increased reliance on surface water under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Minister said initiatives such as lake rejuvenation, year-round water supply using treated and surface water, and public awareness campaigns had contributed to reducing over-extraction and improving recharge. "Instead of depending solely on the 120-day monsoon, we are ensuring water availability throughout the year through scientific management," he said, adding that this approach has strengthened water security for both rural and urban populations. Looking ahead, the government plans to roll out a Digital Water Stack (DWS) framework, integrating space technology and artificial intelligence-based satellite surveillance for real-time groundwater monitoring.
