Srinagar, June 05: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office (JKBO), Thursday marked the World Environment Day by organising a series of impactful activities across various districts of J&K, in alignment with the global theme "Ending Plastic Pollution Globally." The celebrations commenced with a Plantation Camp led by Shri Tilak Raj, Director and Head, BIS JKBO, at the green belt in front of SIDCO Park, Bari Brahmana, Jammu -- an area maintained by BIS JKBO. The initiative reinforced BIS's ongoing commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and public awareness. As part of the Standard Club initiative, a variety of competitions and awareness drives were organised in schools across the UT, including essay writing, poster making, drawing competitions, plantation drives, and cleanliness campaigns. Highlights of the celebrations include- at Government Girls Higher Secondary School on June 02, Kathua, where an essay writing competition on the theme "Ending Global Plastic Pollution" was conducted under the guidance of Monika Sharma, BIS resource person. Students received biodegradable cloth bags sponsored by BIS, encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives. At Government Model Higher Secondary School, Hatli, Kathua on June 3, a similar essay competition was held, again led by Monika Sharma, reinforcing the message of sustainability and plastic waste reduction. On June 4, at Government Model Higher Secondary School, Dhanore, Kathua, the initiative continued with distribution of eco-friendly cloth bags and an awareness session on plastic pollution. On the same day, at Government High School, Phalote, Kathua, an essay writing competition was organized where students pledged to minimize plastic use, guided by Monika Sharma. Another function was held at Government Boys Higher Secondary School (BHSS), Samba where a poster making competition was conducted under the guidance of Principal Anju Bagal and BIS Mentor Seema Sambyal.
