Kolkata, April 9 (UNI) Former Malda South Congress MP Abu Hasem Khan Chowdhury, popularly known as Dalu, passed away on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Kolkata. He was 89 and had been suffering from prolonged illness. Dalu's son, Isha Khan Chowdhury, is the current Congress MP from Malda South. Dalu came from a prominent political family. His uncle, former union Minister A. B. A. Ghani Khan Chowdhury, passed away just before the state assembly elections on April 14, 2006 - two decades ago. At that time, Dalu was the MLA from Kaliachak and subsequently won the by-election to become MP from the undivided Malda constituency. After delimitation, he won the Malda South Lok Sabha seat in 2009, 2014, and 2019. He also served as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the UPA II government from 2012 to 2014. Dalu had long been associated with his uncle Ghani Khan as a political aide. He first entered electoral politics by winning the Kaliachak assembly seat in 1996 and retained it in 2001. Another of his uncles, the late Abu Naser Khan Chowdhury, was a minister in the Congress-Trinamool government in West Bengal in 2011. His sister, the late Ruby Noor, was a veteran Congress MLA, and her daughter, Mausam Benazir Noor, served as Congress MLA from Sujapur and Malda North MP. Although Mausam joined Trinamool in 2019, she recently returned to Congress and is contesting from the Malatipur assembly seat. Condolences poured in from Congress leaders.
