Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand has once again surprised residents and pilgrims. Continuous rain and snowfall have brought back winter-like conditions in April, just weeks before the Char Dham Yatra begins. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for April 9, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Rain in hilly districts, snowfall in high altitudes According to the Meteorological Center, light to moderate rain is expected in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Snowfall has been reported in areas above 3,000 meters, including Kedarnath, Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath. The fresh snow has intensified the cold and raised concerns about preparations for the upcoming pilgrimage. Dry plains but cloudy skies While the plains are expected to remain mostly dry, cloudy skies and strong winds are likely. The IMD has cautioned residents to remain alert due to the possibility of lightning and gusty winds in several districts. Cold returns to Dehradun Rain began in Dehradun and nearby areas on Tuesday afternoon and continued into Wednesday. The downpour forced residents to take out warm clothes again. The maximum temperature in Dehradun dropped to 23°C, six degrees below normal, while the minimum was recorded at 14.6°C. Sharp drop in temperatures across Uttarakhand - Udham Singh Nagar: Max 20.8°C, Min 17.2°C - Mukteshwar: Max 6.2°C, Min 4.5°C - New Tehri: Max 8.0°C, Min 4.8°C In many hilly districts, the maximum temperature has fallen to 17°C, far below the seasonal average. Highest April rainfall since 2020 Officials reported that this is the highest rainfall recorded in April since 2020. The unusual weather has disrupted daily life, with commuters facing difficulties and farmers worried about crop damage. Impact on crops and Char Dham Yatra preparations Unseasonal rain and hailstorms have damaged standing crops in several areas, particularly in Nainital district. Farmers fear losses in wheat and horticulture produce. Meanwhile, preparations for the Char Dham Yatra are being affected, as snow clearance and road maintenance work face delays. Heavy rainfall has been reported in the Kumaon region, adding to the cold. Residents say they have rarely experienced such chilly conditions in April. Light rain in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh The Meteorological Center predicts partly cloudy skies with thunderstorms and light rain in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh over the next few days. Snowfall is expected to continue in high-altitude areas. In the plains, strong winds and lightning remain possible, and people have been advised to stay cautious. With the Char Dham Yatra approaching, the unusual April weather has raised concerns for both pilgrims and locals.
