Bhubaneswar: In a move aimed at improving last-mile access to cooking fuel, the Odisha government has announced that 5-kg LPG cylinders will soon be made available at petrol pumps across the state. The announcement was made by State Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Wednesday evening. He said the initiative aligns with the Centre's Free Trade LPG Scheme and aims to expand access to smaller, more affordable fuel options. Under the new system, consumers will be able to purchase 5-kg cylinders at petrol pumps by presenting a valid identification card. The initial cost of the cylinder has been fixed at ₹1,537, while refills will be available at ₹593. The scheme is expected to benefit urban and semi-urban households, particularly those with lower consumption needs or limited storage space, for whom standard 14.2-kg cylinders may be impractical. Officials said the cylinders will be supplied by the country's three major public sector LPG providers -- Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum -- ensuring adequate availability across the state. The minister clarified that refilling will be permitted only for cylinders issued by authorised oil marketing companies, ruling out the use of unauthorised or third-party containers. By leveraging the widespread network of petrol pumps, the initiative is expected to streamline distribution and significantly enhance accessibility, particularly in densely populated areas where conventional LPG supply channels may be less efficient.
