Thiruvananthapuram: Over 2.6 crore electors will head to polling stations on Thursday to decide the fate of 883 candidates across 140 assembly constituencies in Kerala. The election will determine the composition of the 140-member Legislative Assembly in a high-stakes contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Voting in Kerala will be conducted in a single phase, beginning at 7 a.m., while the current Assembly's tenure ends on May 23. In the southern state, a total of 2,69,53,644 voters are registered. This includes 1,38,27,319 female voters, 1,31,26,048 male voters, and 277 voters in the third gender category. Among them, around 4,24,518 voters fall in the 18-19 age group, while 2,04,608 voters are senior citizens aged 85 years and above. To ensure smooth conduct of polling, 30,471 polling stations have been set up. Out of these, 119 serve as logistics and voting machine distribution centres, and 41 are designated as vote counting centres. Kerala Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U. Kelkar stated that approximately 1.46 lakh trained polling personnel will be deployed across all polling stations. He also informed that FIRs related to election activities have been registered against 180 individuals. Providing further details, he said that the total electorate stands at around 2.71 crore, including 53,984 service voters. Votes will be counted in 140 strong rooms across 43 locations. Over 1,200 police teams are actively working on the ground to ensure security, and all Election Commission initiatives are being implemented effectively. Kerala has been governed by the CPI(M)-led LDF for the past decade. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the LDF retained power by winning 99 seats, becoming the first incumbent government since 1977 to secure consecutive terms. The UDF won 41 seats, while the NDA, led by the BJP, did not win any seats despite securing an 11.4 percent vote share. Following the victory, Pinarayi Vijayan became the first Chief Minister of Kerala to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term. The CPI(M) emerged as the largest party with 62 seats, while the Congress secured 21 seats and the CPI won 17. The Indian Union Muslim League, a key ally of the UDF, secured 15 seats.
