Pune: BMW, India's second biggest German luxury car maker Wednesday said it clocked the highest-ever Q1 car sales, registering consistently high double-digit growth in an otherwise moderate luxury car segment performance. The maker of popular BMW M2 CS and BMW X3 30 models, sold 4,567 cars in the first quarter of calendar year 2026, achieving year-on-year high growth of 17 per cent. The company said each month in the January-March period recorded its best-ever sales, indicating sustained demand momentum across its portfolio. The electric vehicles (EVs) continued to be a key growth driver for the BMW brand. BMW and Mini together sold 1,185 EVs during the quarter, registering an 83 per cent increase over the year-ago period. EVs accounted for 26 per cent of total sales, with the company maintaining over 70 per cent market share in India's luxury EV segment, dominated by compatriot archrival Mercedes-Benz. While the BMW X1 SUV was the largest-selling overall model for BMW during the quarter, the BMW iX1 electric SUV was the company's best-selling EV. "BMW Group India has entered CY26 in an extremely strong position. We have achieved our highest-ever Q1 sales, registering solid double-digit growth, despite macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds," said Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO, BMW Group India. "Our lead in India's luxury electric mobility also continues thanks to the immense trust our valued customers have put in our electric offerings in terms of performance, EV ecosystem and technology," he noted. Segment-wise, SUVs continued to dominate the portfolio with a 65 per cent share in BMW sales. The segment grew 38 per cent y-o-y to 2,966 units, reflecting continued consumer preference for high-riding vehicles. Mini also posted strong growth, with sales rising 42 per cent to 213 units in the first quarter, supported by an expanded product range including the Countryman and the Countryman and Convertible models. BMW Motorrad delivered 1,216 motorcycles during the period, with demand driven by models such as the G 310 R and S 1000 RR. BMW Group India has an aggressive product strategy in CY26, with 27 launches scheduled across BMW, Mini and BMW Motorrad brands. Four products have already been introduced in Q1, while eight more are planned for the second quarter. The company is also expanding its retail footprint and customer engagement initiatives. It currently has 97 touchpoints across 40 cities and plans to add 19 more outlets in 18 cities during the year.
