Chennai, Apr 8 (UNI) In a major reshuffle of the Tamil Nadu bureaucracy, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday shunted out Chief Secretary N Muruganandam, replacing him with senior IAS officer M Saikumar with immediate effect. Following the EC directive, Saikumar, a 1990 batch officer who was Personal Secretary to former Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, assumed office at the Secretariat. Prior to this he was Chairman and Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd. The incumbent Muruganandam, who assumed office in 2024, was relieved of his duties, official sources said. The EC has also ordered the appointment of senior IPS officer Sandeep Mittal as the DGP, Armed Reserve and Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, in place of Davidson Devasirvatham. The poll panel had also effected transfer of SPs in a few districts. It had earlier shifted Tamil Ndu DGP and Head of Police Force G Venkatraman and posted senior officer Sandeep Rai Rathore in his place. Maintaining that the changes had been made as part of the election preparedness in the state, the EC had asked for a compliance report of the officers taking over their new responsibilities by Wednesday itself. The Commission had also directed that the two officers who had been shunted out should not be entrusted with any election related work. Interestingly, the transfer of top bureaucrats comes close on the heels of West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee alleging that there is collusion between the EC and the DMK and Congress.
