New Delhi: To reduce congestion and cut travel time, India's financial capital, Mumbai, will get its first driverless personal rapid transit system -- pod taxi -- soon. The first phase of the project will be completed within 10 months. The Automated Rapid Transit System (ARTS) being developed between Kurla and BKC will ease last-mile congestion in the business district. It will connect major locations like LBS Marg, Kalanagar, and BKC, linking Bandra and Kurla suburban railway stations. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is at the helm of the 8.85 km ARTS. It will be developed in phases. 22 stations at intervals of 200 metres The project, when completed, will have 22 stations at intervals of 200 metres. Phase one will cover a 3.36-km stretch between Bandra (East) and Kurla. The driverless, AI-based pods will run on battery power, carrying six passengers. It will run at a speed of 40 kmph and stop at stations selected by passengers, enabling faster and more efficient travel. The system will integrate with Metro Line 3 at BKC and with Metro Line 2B at ITO and IL&FS stations. A depot will be created at RLDA plot in Bandra East for the pods. Officials expecting daily ridership of over 1 lakh Officials expect a daily ridership of over 1 lakh passengers by 2031 and will reduce congestion and cut travel time. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the project on Tuesday at Diamond Garden metro station in Chembur. Deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar were present at the function. The chief minister said that all necessary approvals for the project have been received. Addressing the function, Fadnavis said the pod taxi project has been planned in such a way that passengers travelling to Kurla or Bandra won't be required to use any other public transport. "A person alighting either from the metro or a suburban train will not be required to use another mode of public transport thereafter. He can reach within a distance of 100 to 150 metres by this pod taxi," he said.
