Telangana makes cancer a notifiable disease; Here's what it means

Cancer care: Until now, only three medical institutions maintained a cancer registry, which was limited to Hyderabad. Hyderabad: Telangana government has issued an order to make cancer a 'notifiable disease'. A statewide portal to register cancer cases was also launched on Tuesday. Any cancer case diagnosed or registered at a government or private hospital or other healthcare facilities must be reported on the portal within a month. The decision to declare cancer as a notifiable disease will be backed by a structural system that will identify, track and treat patients across the state. Limited registry at three medical institutions so far: According to reports, Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Hospital, Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) and MNJ Institute of Oncology (MNJIO) are the only medical institutions which maintained a cancer registry, which was limited to Hyderabad. The new portal will make it compulsory for all hospitals, nursing homes, labs to report cases to the health department. It will be on the district medical and health officer (DMHO) to make sure every case is reported. Doctors at various hospitals have said that making cancer notifiable will create a robust system to track incidence, prevalence and mortality. Cancer care system to be structured as hub-and-spoke model: MNJ hospital will serve as the apex centre and district cancer centres will function as spokes, officials said. Cases will be identified through several entry points - including women's health clinics and non-communicable disease initiatives. It includes screenings at Aarogya Mahila clinics, NCD surveys and questionnaires, which may help flag potential cases for referral. They will be referred to government general hospitals, where diagnoses will be confirmed and patients will be brought into the treatment system. MNJ and NIMS hospitals will serve as apex hospitals to carry out initial medical management and chemotherapy and those who face travel challenges, can continue treatment at district cancer care centres. "It reduces burden on tertiary care hospitals and improves accessibility and continuity in treatment," said S Sangeetha Satyanarayana, commissioner, health and family welfare department.
