New Delhi: Donald Trump has lost this war. And Pakistan has helped expose that loss in the most embarrassing way possible. The man who projected himself as the ultimate dealmaker has ended up depending on the same Pakistan he once projected as a crisis manager during Operation Sindoor. This is clear proof that Trump is no longer dictating terms and is instead trying to exit on terms shaped by others. It is also about loss of face, loss of leverage and loss of the central claim Trump made about himself that he could threaten, escalate and still come out looking stronger. Rewind to Operation Sindoor. When India launched its strikes and Pakistan came under pressure, Islamabad turned to Trump. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief Asim Munir sought US intervention to prevent further escalation. Trump stepped in, praised the Pakistani leadership and amplified the claim that catastrophe had been averted. He repeated dramatic claims that millions of lives had been saved because Pakistan had reached out to him. He made it sound as though Pakistan's leadership had acted with rare wisdom and he had personally delivered the rescue. Trump projected himself as the man who could step into a crisis, talk tough, make a few calls and emerge looking like the only adult in the room. Pakistan looked relieved to have Washington step in when it was under pressure. Now the roles have reversed. Trump launched his war on Iran on February 28. Five weeks later, that campaign has not delivered what it was supposed to. Iran's nuclear infrastructure remains intact. The Strait of Hormuz is still effectively under Tehran's control. Trump's rhetoric about total destruction has given way to a two-week suspension of strikes and talks based on Iran's own proposal. Trump's original position was simple: open the Strait immediately or face devastating consequences. Iran did not yield on those terms. Instead, Tehran said safe passage would happen only in coordination with its armed forces. In effect, Iran has retained control over the chokepoint and the right to regulate movement through it. Trump then reposted Iran's own statement and accepted its 10-point proposal as the "workable basis" for negotiations. In that case, this is not America imposing a settlement. It is America moving onto Iran's ground. That is where Pakistan comes back into the picture. At best, this can be described as Pakistan returning a favour to Trump. The same Pakistan that once rushed to Trump to save itself from Indian wrath is now helping Trump manage his own moment of loss. The same leadership that Trump once praised for supposedly helping save millions of lives is now part of the diplomatic channel easing him into a ceasefire process with Iran. Islamabad lobbied for more time, helped create the diplomatic opening and is now hosting the negotiations. This is what makes the optics so damaging for Trump. During the India-Pakistan crisis, Pakistan needed Trump. In the Iran war, Trump has needed Pakistan. The man who once behaved as though he was rescuing Islamabad now looks like he needs Islamabad to help him find a way out. This cuts directly against the image Trump has built for years. Pakistan, meanwhile, does not emerge from this looking principled or consistent. It looks transactional, as it often does in moments of regional tension. It sided with Saudi Arabia yesterday when that suited its interests. It is now mediating for Iran when that suits its interests. It speaks one language to one camp and another to the other. And through it all, it keeps presenting itself as indispensable. As they say, brokering is an art mastered by Pakistan and used as the nation's mainstay or lifeline. Trump no longer looks like the strongman who can threaten and win, and Pakistan doesn't look like anything more than a state skilled at brokering. The Iran war has exposed both Trump and Pakistan as jokers.
