Guwahati: Relief operations in Sikkim continue with the IAF employing four Mi-17 and two Cheetah helicopters into service. A defence spokesperson said, "On Thursday they were able to reach isolated and severely affected areas of Chaten. The helicopters were airborne at dawn and evacuated more than hundred survivors, including children, within a short period, in the tiny weather window available. They have delivered much needed succour to civilians, service personnel and foreigners who have been stranded in this landslide hit region". He added, "199 people have been rescued, and 6000 kg of relief material was inducted in 22 sorties today." Hundreds of tourists were stuck up in different areas recently as the state witnessed flooding following incessant rain and landslides struck different locations. The death toll in floods has increased to 16 in Assam. A total of 19 districts in Assam are still reeling under flood affecting 678877 people. Apart from the flood related death, five persons have died due to landslide last month in Assam's capital town Guwahati as incessant rainfall had triggered rainfall in different areas of Guwahati. A flood bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority on Thursday said that a total of 1474 villages in 63 revenue circles have remained affected by the floods on Thursday. The government has opened 190 relief camps to house and shelter the flood victims in different flood hit districts and 215 relief distribution centres to ensure that the flood affected people get the required food grains and other basic items. "Two persons died due to flooding in the last 24 hours including one in Nagaon and another in Cachar districts," said an official of the ASDMA adding that 41 000 people have taken shelter in the relief camps.
