India achieves milestone as Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor attains criticality, says PM Modi

New Delhi, Apr 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced that India has reached a significant milestone in its civil nuclear programme, with the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam attaining criticality. ‎ In a post on X, the Prime Minister described the development as a "defining step" in the country's nuclear journey. "Today, India takes a defining step in its civil nuclear journey, advancing the second stage of its nuclear programme," Modi said. ‎Highlighting the significance of the achievement, he added, "The indigenously designed and built Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam has attained criticality." ‎The PFBR is a key component of India's three-stage nuclear power programme, which aims to maximise the use of the country's limited uranium resources and vast thorium reserves. Fast breeder reactors are designed to generate more fissile material than they consume, making them crucial for long-term energy security. ‎Emphasising this aspect, Modi noted, "This advanced reactor, capable of producing more fuel than it consumes, reflects the depth of our scientific capability and the strength of our engineering enterprise." He further said the milestone represents "a decisive step towards harnessing our vast thorium reserves in the third stage of the programme." ‎India's nuclear programme, conceived decades ago, is structured in three stages: the first based on pressurised heavy water reactors using natural uranium, the second involving fast breeder reactors, and the third focusing on thorium-based reactors. The successful criticality of the PFBR marks progress in transitioning from the first to the second stage. ‎Congratulating those involved, the Prime Minister called it "a proud moment for India," adding, "Congratulations to our scientists and engineers." ‎The development is expected to strengthen India's position in advanced nuclear technology and boost its efforts toward achieving greater energy independence while maintaining a low-carbon energy mix.
