New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday directed CBI to probe allegations of favouritism in allotment of contracts of public works to firms linked to Arunachal chief minister Pema Khandu and his kin during 2015-2025 across all districts in the state. A three-member bench, comprising justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria, ordered that CBI should launch a preliminary enquiry within two weeks and the probe should cover execution of public work contracts and work orders from January 2015 to December 2025. "Preliminary enquiry and consequential investigation, if any, shall cover execution of public works contracts and work orders within the period January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2025," the bench ordered. The bench clarified that the federal agency shall not be precluded from examining transactions outside the above period. The bench also directed the state government to fully cooperate with the probe. "Arunachal Pradesh shall cooperate fully with CBI. Chief secretary of the state shall designate a nodal officer for coordination with CBI. State shall ensure no record is destroyed," the bench ordered. The agency has been directed to file a status report before the court. The order was passed on a PIL filed by NGO 'Save Mon Region Federation', seeking a probe either by CBI or a special investigation team into the accusations. The petitioner alleged that Arunachal Pradesh was being run like a private company by the CM. Last December, SC had directed the Arunachal government to file a composite affidavit detailing contracts of public works awarded to firms linked to Khandu and his kin. The court had also raised eyebrows over alleged cartelisation, observing that the difference between the competing tenders for the works appeared to be miniscule. Referring to the "miniscule" margin in the tenders, the bench, at a previous hearing, had observed that "...if that is so, that becomes serious.
