Shillong, Apr 6 (PTI) The Voice of the People Party in Meghalaya urged the Centre to adopt a balanced approach over the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), ensuring protection of property rights and continuity of social welfare services. In a representation sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party expressed "deep concern" over certain proposed provisions, particularly those relating to the takeover or control of assets of organisations whose FCRA registration is cancelled. "While we acknowledge the legitimate role of the Government of India in ensuring transparency, accountability and national security in matters concerning foreign contributions, certain provisions have generated widespread apprehension among civil society organisations," the party said. "The provision enabling the State to assume control over assets raises serious questions about proportionality, due process and the potential for misuse," it added. The VPP noted that many institutions, especially in the Northeast, serve as pillars of social welfare in areas such as education, healthcare and rural development. "A significant number of these organisations are run by minority communities, including Christian institutions, which have historically delivered essential services in remote and underserved areas," it said. "Any policy framework that creates uncertainty regarding ownership and management may inadvertently disrupt these services and affect the livelihoods of countless beneficiaries," it added. The party expressed hope that a balanced approach can be achieved, one that safeguards national interests while also protecting the invaluable contributions of civil society to nation-building.
