Srinagar, Apr 05: Groundwater levels in Jammu and Kashmir have increased in a majority of monitored wells after the 2025 monsoon, though a significant proportion continues to show a decline, according to official data accessed by Rising Kashmir. As per the data, 64.25 per cent of wells in J&K recorded a rise in groundwater levels, while 34.78 per cent showed a decline compared to the decadal post-monsoon average between 2015 and 2024. The assessment is based on monitoring of 207 wells across the Union Territory, of which 133 showed an increase in water levels and 72 registered a decline. Officials said the variation reflects differences in recharge and extraction across regions, with areas dependent on groundwater for domestic use and irrigation continuing to report lower levels. At the national level, 73.25 per cent of wells recorded a rise in groundwater levels during the same period. The total annual groundwater recharge in the country has increased from 432 billion cubic metres in 2017 to 448.52 billion cubic metres in 2025, the data shows. Officials said that while overall groundwater availability has improved, localised stress persists in several regions due to factors such as population pressure, urban expansion and cropping patterns. Groundwater monitoring is conducted regularly by the Central Ground Water Board in coordination with state and Union Territory governments, with annual assessments being carried out since 2022. Government programmes on water conservation and recharge, including rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge structures, are being implemented to improve groundwater levels. Officials said groundwater management is the responsibility of states and Union Territories, while the Centre provides technical and financial support under various schemes. In Jammu and Kashmir, the focus remains on monitoring groundwater levels and implementing recharge measures where ever required.
