Bengal actor's drowning: Artists call 'cease work' seeking proper arrangements during shooting

Kolkata, Apr 5 (PTI) A forum of artists in West Bengal on Sunday called for an indefinite 'cease work' of shooting of films and serials, demanding proper safety arrangements during their work. The move came days after actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee drowned in the sea during an outdoor shoot near Digha in Purba Medinipur district. The West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum held a meeting during the day and decided that unless a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is framed and adopted, following talks among all stakeholders, including production houses, actors and technicians, they will cease work from 10 am on April 6. Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers president Swaroop Biswas, also present at the meeting, supported the decision, saying that an SOP is essential so that no more mishaps take place in future. "We are going on a cease work till an SOP is framed and adopted, factoring the safety and security issues of every single member of the cast and crew, both on the floors and outside. We had a discussion with the representatives of channels and production houses, and all of us agreed on the issue," director Kaushik Ganguly said. Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee said the sudden death of Rahul has pointed out many loopholes in the shooting system. "We don't wish to take any side or be judgmental against anyone. All we want is a safety and security cover," he said. "All of us know how the cancellation of a day's shooting causes financial stress on every stakeholder. But a few days of sacrifice will ensure that the actors, technicians and crew members safely return home after their work," Ganguly said. A day ago, the forum lodged an FIR with Kolkata Police against the producers of the serial, casting Rahul, and accused them of conducting the shoot in a "negligent manner". "We want the truth and exact circumstances behind the incident to come to light," Santilal Mukherjee, the general secretary of the forum, told reporters. "On March 29, during the shooting of television serial 'Bholey Baba Par Karega' at Talsari near Digha, our colleague and forum member, actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee, tragically passed away due to an accidental drowning," the forum said in a statement on Friday night.
