Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday asked whether veteran actor Kamal Haasan was a linguist or a historian, as it strongly criticised his controversial remarks over the Kannada language. The Court observed that a "single apology could have resolved the situation." Justice M Nagaprasanna, who presided over the hearing, said that the statement had hurt the sentiments of the people of Karnataka and questioned Haasan's refusal to offer an apology. "Language is an emotional and cultural identity of a people," he said and stressed that no individual has the right to make comments that undermine the pride of an entire linguistic community, the court observed. Justice Nagaprasanna remarked, "Are you a historian or a linguist to make such a statement? No language is born out of another. A single apology could have resolved the situation." The court made the observations as it began hearing petitions seeking direction to authorities, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, not to take any measures--to restrain or refrain from screening and releasing actor Hassan's Tamil-language action thriller 'Thug Life' in Karnataka, which is scheduled for release on June 5. In further observation, the High Court said, "Discretion is the best part of valour, we will not permit anybody's sentiments to be taken for a ride. Mistakes happen; you must know what to do when mistakes happen. You say crores are spent, then leave Karnataka." The Advocate appearing for Hassan said he would return to the court at 2:30 pm. "You use your good office and come back, all is well that ends well. I will take it at 2.30 pm," the Court said, indicating that if the Cine Star were to apologise, the matter would be settled. The movie, directed by Mani Ratnam, starring Hassan, Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR has been facing trouble in Karnataka after Hassan's "Kannada was born out of Tamil" remarks sparked anger among local groups, including the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). The film's release has been banned until the actor issues a public apology for his statement. Haasan made the remark at the audio release of his film in Chennai in the last week of May, stoking a controversy, triggering protests in the neighbouring state.
