Dibrugarh: ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR-NRC on Yak), Dirang successfully conducted a yak re-introduction programme at Mechuka Block of Arunachal Pradesh's Shi-Yomi district on Friday. The programme was organized under the chairmanship of Mihir Sarkar, Director, with the objective of promoting livestock-based livelihoods, enhancing eco-tourism opportunities, and conserving the traditional cultural heritage associated with yak rearing in the region. The programme was implemented in collaboration with the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation (JMMFF) and the Animal Husbandry Department, Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The initiative focused on collaborative efforts to expand scientific yak husbandry and support tribal communities in high-altitude areas. The event was coordinated by Vijay Paul, Principal Scientist, along with Tadang Tamut, Chairman, JMMFF, and Jumter Tali, Veterinary Officer, Animal Husbandry Department, Mechuka. As part of the programme, six yaks (four females and two males) were distributed to selected tribal farmers to support livelihood improvement. In addition, 45 farmers benefited from awareness programmes on scientific yak rearing and received input support under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) activity of the Institute.
