Kolkata, Apr 3 (PTI) Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who is contesting the West Bengal polls from Berhampore, has declared total movable assets of Rs 48.40 lakh, a rise of Rs 9.05 lakh from 2024 when he fought the Lok Sabha polls. According to his poll affidavit, Chowdhury has Rs 94,500 cash in hand, while his wife, Atasi, has Rs 7.25 lakh. His movable assets include Rs 6.42 lakh in four bank accounts, mutual fund investments worth Rs 8.15 lakh, a life insurance policy of Rs 3 lakh, a vehicle valued at Rs 22.27 lakh, and gold jewellery worth Rs 27.60 lakh. His total movable assets stand at Rs 48.40 lakh. In comparison, the movable assets of the senior Congress leader's wife amount to Rs 1.27 crore, including bank deposits, mutual funds, insurance, a car worth Rs 2.79 lakh and jewellery valued at over Rs 1 crore. In his 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit, the former West Bengal Congress chief had declared having Rs 2.11 lakh cash in hand and his wife Rs 5.49 lakh. His total movable assets then were valued at Rs 39.35 lakh, while his wife's stood at Rs 64.41 lakh. At that time, he had also declared immovable assets worth Rs 2.78 crore, while his wife owned properties worth Rs 49 lakh. The April 1 affidavit also states that a dependent of the Congress leader owns movable assets worth Rs 27.92 lakh. Chowdhury himself does not own any immovable property. His wife has liabilities of Rs 24.62 lakh, including a bank loan of Rs 7.91 lakh. In the affidavit for the West Bengal Assembly polls, filed on April 1, Chowdhury has declared three pending criminal cases against him -- two in Murshidabad and one in Malda district -- though no charges have been framed in any of them yet. The affidavit notes that his formal education is up to Class 9, though the senior Congress leader has shown great communication skills in Hindi and English in his long parliamentary and political career. Chowdhury had first contested an Assembly election in 1991 from Nabagram in Murshidabad and lost. He then went on to win the seat in 1996, marking his debut as an MLA. Over the next three decades, he established himself as a prominent Congress face, winning the Berhampore Lok Sabha seat five consecutive times and serving in key positions, including Union Minister of State for Railways and the Leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha.
