Kolkata, Apr 3 (PTI) Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday said his party will stand by people whose names are found deleted after the publication of supplementary electoral rolls and alleged attempts to deprive genuine voters of their rights. Alleging "sustained pressure" by the BJP on the Election Commission to delete names of genuine voters and include those from other states through Form 6, the TMC national general secretary said, "We have to be on guard 24x7 to foil the bid to deprive the electorate of Bengal of voting rights." Banerjee, who was addressing a rally at Khanakul in West Bengal's Hooghly district in support of the TMC candidate, said, "We will be on vigil to stop deletion of a single authorised voter. We will not allow them to get away with that." "There is the next hearing date at the Supreme Court on April 6. We will wait. But let me assert, if your name is absent from the rolls, the party will take up the matter with the CEO's office. Also, if your name is missing, make an online appeal through our department," he said. Banerjee claimed that a few days ago, the TMC detected a bid "to submit sackfuls of Form 6 files to the CEO's office in Kolkata". "The BJP is trying to influence the EC for inclusion of names of voters living outside Bengal in the electoral rolls, repeating their strategy in Maharashtra assembly polls, where they had similarly omitted names of lakhs of legitimate voters and then included names of voters from other states. Bengal is not like other states. Bengal will not allow BJP's game plan to succeed," he said. Accusing the saffron party of doublespeak, he said that while it professes its love for backward castes and tribals, in reality BJP-ruled states top in the number of atrocities against people from backward classes and minorities. "Among cases of atrocities on SCs, STs in the 2023 NCRB report, Uttar Pradesh occupies the top spot with 15,130 incidents, followed by Rajasthan 8,450 and Madhya Pradesh 8229," he claimed. Ask them about the deletion of names, but please remain peaceful. Everyone should be allowed to campaign peacefully, and you should give your reply through the EVM," he said. Alleging that the BJP was trying to control the Election Commission, the Diamond Harbour MP said, "They have the remote control, but we have the EVM button, which they cannot take away from us." "Prices of LPG cylinders have risen from Rs 400 to Rs 1,000, milk from Rs 28 to over Rs 60, kerosene from Rs 14 to Rs 40. Prices of every essential commodity have skyrocketed," he claimed. "The Modi government only forces people to stand in long queues - from LPG dealers' camps to SIR hearing camps, from bank branches and ATMs after notebandi. It never thinks about the agony and misery of people," he said. Banerjee also referred to the days of lockdown, which "was declared by the Modi government in an unplanned manner," and how it compounded the misery of thousands of migrant workers from Bengal who were stranded at their workplaces due to the sudden shutdown and had great difficulty in returning.
