Chenai, Apr 3 (UNI) After hectic discussions, the BJP on Friday afternoon released the eagerly awaited and much delayed list of 27 candidates contesting the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections nominating key leaders, while leaving out a sulking former party State Uni President K Annamalai. Among those who were given tickets included two sitting MLAs--BJP State Unit President and Floor leader Nainar Nagendran (Sattur), and National Mahila Morcha President Ms Vanathi Srinivasan (Coimbatore North)--besides senior leader and union Minister L Murugan (Avinashi Reserved) and Ms Vijayadharani (Vilavancode), the seat represented by her as Congress MLA before quitting the party and joining the BJP, and senior state leaders of the saffron party. The list included five women candidtes. However, one of prominent names missing from the list was Mr Annamalai, who was keen to contest either from Singanallur or Kaundampalayam seats in his native Coimbatore district. However, both the seats were not allotted to the saffron party by the AIADMK, heading the NDA, shattering the aspirations of the ex-BJP State Chief. Though the BJP National leadership tried to accommodate him in some other seat in neighbouring Tiruppur district, Mr Annamalai has reportedly expressed his displeasure and refused to enter the fray as he did not wish to contest from a seat which was not of his choice. Amid reports that though the disappointment in Mr Annamalai was palpable and that he could refrain from campaigning, he said that despite not contesting the polls, he would devote his full attention in poll-related duty as a true Karyakarta of BJP. Another popular face missing from the list was renowned actress and BJP State Vice-President Ms Khushbu Sundar, who had unsuccessfully contested the previous polls from Thousand Lights constituency in Chennai and eventually lost to the DMK candidate and former union Minister and senior leader Pon Radhakrishnan who too was keen to enter the Assembly poll fray. Even before the list was officially announced, Ms Tamilisai, who is also the former Lt Governor of Puducherrry and Telangana Governor and has unsuccessfully contested the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from the southern Thoothukudi seat, Mr Nainar Nagendran and Mr Murugan have already commenced their campaigning from their respective constituencies after their ticket to contest the polls became a foregone conclusion. Ms Tamilisai was also present when AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, who is also the CM face of the NDA Front, kickstarted his poll campaign from the Mylapore constituency in Chennai last week and appealed to the voters to vote for Ms Tamilisai. Mr Nainar, also a former AIADMK strongman, too has started his electioneering at Sattur in Virudhunagar district from where he was contesting instead of neighbouring Tirunelveli from where he was elected to the State Assembly in 2021, while Mr Murugan has hit the campaign trail at Avinashi. . The list was announced rather belatedly and with just two days left for filing of nominations (tomorrow and Monday) which the saffron party attributed to many candidates aspiring to contest from the same seat. Dismissing the delay in releasing the list, Mr Nainar Nagendran said there was still enough time left for filing of nominations and that the delay would not affect the BJP's and that of the NDA's poll prospects and sounded confidence of winning by a big margin of over 200 seats and dethrone the ruling DMK. As per the seat sharing agreement, of the total 234 seats, the AIADMK is contesting in 167 seats after allotting 67 seats to NDA partners, including the BJP, PMK, AMMK, TMC and minor allies. The AIADMK has allotted 27 seats to its key ally BJP, 18 to the OBC-Vanniyar dominated PMK faction headed by former union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP-elect Dr Anbumani, 11 to Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) TTV Dhinakaran, who was re-inducted into the NDA fold after severing the ties a few months back, five to Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) of former union Shipping Minister G K Vasan and two seats to Indhiya Jananayaga Katchi (IJK) and one each to minor allies, New Justice Party (NJP), Tamilaga Makkal Munentra Kazhagam (TMMK), Puratchi Bharatham and Singa Tamizhar Munnetra Kazhagam (STMK). While Mr Vasan's party would be contesting under the BJP's "Lotus" symbol this time, other minor allies would contest either under BJP or the AIADMK's popular "Two Leaves" symbol.
