Imphal, April 3 (UNI) A medical emergency aboard an Air India from Tokyo to New Delhi was successfully averted after the Manipur-based critical care specialist stepped in to provide timely treatment. Dr Loni Liriina saved a 21-year-old woman midair, prompting Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand to congratulate her for her expertise. Dr Loni Liriina said the incident occurred on February 28, 2026 on board flight AI357, nearly eight hours into the journey, when cabin crew announced a medical emergency and sought assistance from qualified medical professionals among the passengers. Dr Loni Liriina, a critical care physician with the American Oncology Institute at Babina Specialty Hospital, Imphal along with another doctor of foreign nationality attended the 21-year-old passenger who complained of severe chest pain and breathlessness. The passenger had a history of childhood asthma but had not been on medication for several years. Upon examination, the patient was found to be in severe respiratory distress, with a heart rate exceeding 160 beats per minute, low blood pressure and oxygen saturation at 80% on room air. Dr Liriina diagnosed the condition as an acute asthma attack and immediately administered emergency treatment using limited onboard medical resources, including oxygen support, nebulisation, and essential medication. Her swift intervention stabilised the patient within 30 minutes. Thanks to the timely medical response, the aircraft was able to continue its scheduled journey without requiring an emergency diversion. The flight later landed safely in New Delhi, where the passenger was reported to be in a stable condition. Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand commended the doctor's professionalism and humanitarian service. "A life saved is a testament to both skill and compassion," the Chief Minister said . "I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Dr Loni Liriina of Senapati district, Manipur, for her exemplary courage and timely medical intervention. Her swift response, clinical excellence, and unwavering commitment reflect the highest ideals of medical service."
