Bhubaneswar: The Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police has seized two semiautomatic pistols along with 10 rounds of live ammunition and arrested the prime accused in the City, police said Thursday. The accused was identified as Amaresh Rout alias Kanha, 28, of Sundarapada area under Airfield police limits in Khurda district. According to officials, the operation was carried out April 1 at around 2pm near Hatatola pond in Sundarapada following a specific intelligence input regarding illegal arms movement in the area. Acting swiftly, a team of the SCU conducted surveillance and intercepted the suspect. During the search, police recovered two semi-automatic pistols, 10 rounds of live ammunition, two magazines, one mobile phone, a two-wheeler and Rs 800 in cash from his possession. The accused was taken into custody and was being interrogated to ascertain the source of the firearms and his possible links with a larger illegal arms network, said the cops. The SCU has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, if any, related to illegal weapons trade or crime on landline number 0674-2916383 between 10am and 8pm, assuring confidentiality of informants.
