Export duties on diesel, jet fuel not applicable to Reliance SEZ Refinery: Govt

New Delhi: Export duties levied on diesel and jet fuel won't be applicable to Reliance Industries' special economic zone (SEZ) refinery due to court rulings, a government official said on Thursday. "As per judicial pronouncements on this issue, the special additional excise duty and additional excise duty are not applicable on SEZ refineries," Jainendra Singh Kandhari, Joint Secretary in the finance ministry, told a press conference. Reliance operates two refineries in Gujarat-one catering to the domestic market and the other, located in an SEZ, focused on exports. The SEZ unit has an annual capacity of 35 million tonnes, while the domestic market-focused unit can refine up to 33 million tonnes. Last week, the government imposed export duties of ₹21.50 per litre on diesel and ₹29.50 per litre on jet fuel to discourage exports and ensure adequate domestic supplies amid widespread disruptions caused by the Iran war. These levies are subject to review every fortnight. Export duties were first introduced in 2022 after the Ukraine war to prevent domestic shortages, as refiners began diverting supplies to more lucrative overseas markets. The taxes were later withdrawn but have now been reimposed amid the global energy crunch triggered by the Iran conflict.
