Jamshedpur Fish Kill: MLA Saryu Roy Demands Probe into Subernarekha River Pollution

Jamshedpur: Expressing concern over the death of large quantities of fish in Subernarekha river, Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy on Thursday directed the local administration to clean the waste which has been dumped in the river.Roy inspected the river in Babudih area of the Steel City following reports about the death of large quantities of fish over the past few days. Demanding a probe, Roy said, "The death of fish must be probed as Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers which flow by Jamshedpur and serve as lifelines to 15 lakh people of the city."Roy said, "Going by the data of the central pollution control board, it comes to light that effluent released from industries, without proper treatment, has drastically reduced the dissolved oxygen content in water essential for aquatic life to survive. This could be the primary reason for fish death. It must be impartially investigated by agencies whether the effluent contains cyanide or other toxic components."Roy claimed big firms with huge turnovers are not doing anything to release pollutant-free effluents into the rivers.
