The United Kingdom (UK) has invited India and other countries for urgent multilateral talks on reopening the war-torn Strait of Hormuz today, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced Thursday. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will represent New Delhi, per spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. "The UK side has invited several countries, which also include India, for talks on the Strait of Hormuz. From our side, the Foreign Secretary is attending the meeting this evening...," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. India is also in talks with Iran and other regional players to guarantee uninterrupted and 'safe' transit through the Hormuz Strait. "We are in touch with Iran and other countries there to see how best we can get unimpeded transit and safe transit for our ships, which are carrying products including LPG, LNG, and other products," added Jaiswal. MEA spokesperson also stressed how India has managed to safely cross the Strait; a total of 6 Indian-flagged vessels have successfully transited Hormuz. "Through this conversation that we have had over the last several days, we have had six Indian ships that have been able to safely cross the Strait of Hormuz, and we continue to be in touch with relevant parties," said Randhir Jiaswal. The development comes after a UK-led initiative to bring together 40 countries amid the ongoing West Asia tension and growing security concerns around the global maritime trading chokepoint. It is interesting to note that the US is set to skip the virtual meeting. On India's role in multinational West Asia peace efforts, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the focus remains on maritime safety and energy security. Although MEA did not clarify the specific countries participating in the meeting, but according to a report by Reuters that the list includes the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Czechia, Romania, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
