Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to address the ongoing cooking gas challenges, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra has announced that piped natural gas (PNG) connections will be made for all household consumers in big towns of Odisha. The minister stated that every household in the state's urban areas will be connected to PNG, replacing the use of LPG cylinders, which are reportedly 13% more expensive than PNG. This initiative aims to provide a more reliable, cost-effective, and convenient cooking gas supply while reducing dependency on cylinders. "The Centre has issued a directive to expand PNG connections in urban areas. We held discussions with oil companies today, and they have been directed to provide PNG connections in major cities within the next three months," Patra said. He further clarified that households with PNG connections will no longer be eligible for LPG cylinder supplies. To prevent misuse and black marketing, all LPG consumers will be required to complete e-KYC. Additionally, LPG connections registered in the names of deceased persons will be disconnected immediately. This push for PNG comes amid concerns over LPG availability and supply disruptions, with the state government earlier assuring adequate stocks while urging people not to panic buy. The transition is expected to streamline distribution, lower costs for consumers, and curb irregularities in the LPG system. Oil marketing companies have been tasked with accelerating the rollout in big cities, with modalities being prepared for wider implementation. The government views this as a long-term solution aligned with central directives to promote cleaner and more efficient piped gas infrastructure in urban Odisha. Consumers are advised to stay updated through official channels for connection schedules and e-KYC requirements.
