New Delhi: India's satellite internet story is slowly picking up pace, and this time it's coming from the hills of Meghalaya. The state government has signed a Letter of Intent with Starlink India to test satellite broadband in remote regions. The pilot will focus on areas like education, healthcare, disaster response, and local economic activity. At the same time, discussions are moving at the central level as well. Senior executives from SpaceX recently met telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, even as approvals for commercial rollout are still pending. Things are moving, just not very fast yet. Meghalaya pilot puts Starlink to the test in real conditions The Meghalaya government wants to bring internet to places where towers and fibre networks struggle to reach. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma explained the gap in simple terms. "Over the past 8 years, we have strengthened infrastructure, embraced technology, and improved governance, reducing processes that once took 30 days to just 3 days. Yet, connecting our remotest schools, health centres, and communities remains a challenge," he said. The pilot project is expected to test how satellite connectivity performs in these areas. Starlink uses satellites in low earth orbit, which send internet signals directly to user terminals on the ground. This removes the need for traditional cables or towers. Sangma added, "Our partnership to introduce advanced satellite connectivity technology marks an important step toward bridging this gap. This initiative will help save lives through better healthcare access, improve learning opportunities for students, and enhance livelihoods for farmers and rural communities." Approvals still pending at Centre Even with this pilot moving forward, Starlink services are not ready for a commercial launch in India. The company has received a license from IN SPACe to operate its Gen1 satellite network for five years. It has already conducted test demonstrations in Mumbai on October 30 and 31 and met the required security and technical standards for satellite broadband. Still, a few steps remain before launch. TRAI has to decide how satellite spectrum will be priced, and the Department of Telecommunications needs to allocate the required spectrum bands. Security clearance is also under review at this stage. On the policy side, telecom minister Scindia confirmed the recent meeting with Starlink leadership, saying, "It was a pleasure to meet Ms. Gwynne Shotwell, President & COO, @SpaceX, Ms. Lauren Dreyer, Vice President, Global Business, @Starlink and the India leadership team today." Pricing confusion and next steps Starlink's pricing appeared briefly online in December 2025, showing ₹8,600 per month and a one-time hardware cost of ₹34,000. The company later clarified that this was only test information and not final pricing.
