Hyderabad: Telangana is way behind other southern states in adopting renewable energy, ranks last in capacity addition over the past five years.According to data from the ministry of new and renewable energy tabled in the Rajya Sabha, the state added only 1,200 megawatt (MW) of renewable energy, , including solar, wind and biomass, between 2020-21 and 2024-25. This is significantly lower compared with Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.The pace of addition has also slowed sharply. Annual capacity addition dropped nearly five-fold, from 568 MW in 2021-22 to just 83 MW in 2024-25. Notably, Telangana has not added any wind energy capacity, despite being identified as one of the eight states with substantial wind potential. Estimates place the state's wind energy potential at 24.8 GW at 120 metres and 54.7 GW at 150 metres.Officials attribute the slow progress to the absence of a dedicated renewable energy policy until 2025, which created uncertainty and deterred investors. Sources said even modest solar expansion required clear policy backing, which was missing for over a decade between 2014 and 2025."Under the newly introduced Telangana Clean and Green Energy Policy, the state has set a target of adding 20,000 MW of renewable energy, primarily through solar power installations, including panels and solar pump houses. The govt is also exploring floating solar power projects in reservoirs to boost capacity.
