Know why Ranbir Kapoor said 'no' to Lord Rama's role first

Mumbai: Nitesh Tiwari's much-awaited film Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, has been one of the most talked-about projects in recent years. Backed by producer Namit Malhotra and actor Yash, who will also play Ravana, the film has generated massive buzz even before its release. Now, Ranbir Kapoor has shared an interesting revelation about his journey with the film. He had actually rejected the role of Lord Rama when it was first offered to him. Speaking at a special screening of the film's teaser in Los Angeles, Ranbir revealed that his first reaction was a firm "no." He said that when the role was offered to him around four years ago, he didn't feel confident enough to take on such an iconic character. According to him, he believed he was "not fit enough" and "not good enough" to do justice to Lord Rama. What changed his decision was a major turning point in his personal life, becoming a father to his daughter, Raha Kapoor. Ranbir shared that this phase made him reflect on his life and pushed him to improve himself, both personally and professionally. He described the opportunity as something he truly needed at that stage, calling it a moment of gratitude rather than fear. Interestingly, he also called it a "sweet coincidence" that he was stepping into the role of Lord Rama at the same time he became a father, making it a deeply meaningful experience for him. Ranbir also opened up about how he prepared for the role. He said his connection to the story began long ago, especially after watching Ramanand Sagar's Ramayana, which remains deeply rooted in Indian culture. For him, playing Lord Rama is not just about physical transformation, but also about emotional and spiritual understanding. He emphasised the importance of honesty and respect while portraying such a revered character. The excitement around the film continues to grow as Ranbir Kapoor's first look as Lord Rama is set to be unveiled on April 2. Meanwhile, Ramayana Part I is scheduled for a grand theatrical release this Diwali, followed by the second part in Diwali 2027.
