Govt Caps ATF Price Hike at 25% Amid Global Fuel Shock

New Delhi: In a move to shield domestic air travel from a sharp global fuel shock, the government has capped the increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices for domestic airlines at 25%, despite international benchmarks संकेत a potential surge of over 100%. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the decision comes amid an "extraordinary situation in global energy markets," triggered by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. To prevent a steep rise in airfares, public sector oil marketing companies, in consultation with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, implemented only a partial and staggered price increase. According to the ministry, ATF prices in India, deregulated since 2001, are revised monthly based on international benchmarks. Due to current conditions, prices for domestic markets were expected to more than double on April 1. To cushion the impact, oil companies passed on only a 25% increase -- about ₹15 per litre -- to domestic airlines. However, the government clarified that international flight operations will not receive similar relief, and will bear the full increase in ATF prices in line with global rates. As per revised rates effective April 1, 2026, ATF prices rose across major metro cities. In Delhi, prices increased to ₹1,04,927 per kilolitre from ₹96,638.14 in March. Kolkata saw prices rise to ₹1,09,450 from ₹99,587.14, while Mumbai recorded an increase to ₹98,247 from ₹90,451.87. In Chennai, prices went up to ₹1,09,873 from ₹1,00,280.49. The intervention comes amid a global energy crisis triggered by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit chokepoint. Meanwhile, LPG cylinder prices have also been revised upward from April 1, with commercial and smaller cylinders seeing significant hikes across major cities. In Delhi, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder rose by ₹195.50 to ₹2,078.50, while a 5 kg cylinder now costs ₹549, up by ₹51. In Kolkata, the price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder increased by ₹218, reflecting a broader trend of rising fuel costs. However, domestic cooking gas prices remain unchanged at ₹913 per 14.2-kg cylinder in Delhi, following a ₹60 hike on March 7. The latest revisions come amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have disrupted energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
