Srinagar- Fresh snowfall in higher reaches and widespread rainfall across the plains disrupted normal life and road connectivity in Kashmir on Tuesday, while bringing down temperatures across the Valley. Snowfall was reported from Tulail Valley, Razdan Pass and Sadhna Top in Kupwara district, even as several areas recorded moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. According to official data, Baramulla recorded the highest rainfall at 73 mm, followed by Poonch with 68.5 mm. Qazigund received 48.6 mm, Kulgam 42.2 mm, Kupwara 40.8 mm and Srinagar 31.6 mm, while Jammu city recorded 12 mm. The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said the wet spell is likely to continue till April 10, with intermittent rain and snowfall expected across Jammu and Kashmir. "Between March 31 and April 2, brief spells of light rain or snow may occur at isolated places. From April 3 to 4, generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain or snowfall at many places are expected, accompanied by thunder and gusty winds," an official said. Partly cloudy weather is likely between April 5 and 7, followed by fresh spells of light to moderate rain and snowfall in higher reaches from April 8 to 10. Authorities also warned of thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph at isolated places, particularly during late afternoon hours on March 31, April 3 and 4. Meanwhile, road connectivity was hit at several places due to landslides and snowfall. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) remained blocked for several hours due to landslides and shooting stones between Ramban and Banihal. Although traffic was later partially restored, commuters have been advised to avoid night travel. Passenger Light Motor Vehicles are being allowed from both sides in a regulated manner, subject to weather and road conditions. The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road remains closed towards Kargil due to fresh snowfall, while the Mughal Road connecting Shopian and Poonch has also been shut due to snow accumulation. The Bandipora-Gurez road via Razdan Pass has been closed following fresh snowfall, suspending traffic on the nearly 85-km stretch. In Baramulla district, a joint operation by the Army and police rescued 34 students and staff trapped in a government school in Watergam after flash floods inundated the premises. Officials said 30 students and four teachers were evacuated safely after water levels in a nearby stream rose suddenly, adding that the timely operation averted a major tragedy.
