New Delhi, Feb 5 (UNI) The Union Finance Ministry has asked its officials to avoid using ChatGPT, DeepSeek and other artificial intelligence (AI) tools in office devices as such applications could pose risks to confidentiality of government data and documents. "It has been determined that AI tools and AI apps (such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek etc) in the office computers and devices pose risk for confidentiality of Govt data and documents," read the circular dated January 29, 2025. "It is, therefore, advised that the use of AI tools/AI apps in office devices may be strictly avoided," it further said. UNI accessed the circular issued by the Department of Expenditure (DoE). Making ripples across the world, a Chinese start-up in January this year launched open AI source DeepSeek which delivers tasks similar to ChatGPT and has potential to shake up the AI industry. Union Minister for Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said that India will launch its own safe and secure indigenous AI model at an affordable cost. Interacting with the media, the Union Minister said that the Indian AI model is a timely step as India is a trusted nation among the comity of nations and therefore it will help India emerge as a more reliable technological powerhouse of ethical AI solutions in the days to come. "Compared to global models computation costing 2.5 to 3 dollars per hour usage, India's AI Model computation will cost less than less than 100 rupees per hour after 40% government subsidy; Attractive half yearly & annual plans will make it more affordable," as per an official release issued on January 30, 2025. Replying to media queries in the wake of confidentiality and privacy concerns around AI tools, Vaishnaw said DeepSeek can get hosted on Indian servers after security checks so that coders, developers and designers can take benefit of its Open Source code.
