Not one of empires, but of narratives, personalities and political relevance. At the heart of it lies Trichy East -- a compact, densely packed urban constituency that has suddenly become one of the most closely watched seats in Tamil Nadu, after actor-politician C Joseph Vijay announced his decision to contest from here. "We are tired of voting alternatively between the DMK and the AIADMK. Here is someone giving us an alternative, why not give Vijay a chance? I love Vijay as an actor. I am thinking if he gets a chance, maybe he can prove his mettle to be better than others," said Sanghavi, a fruit seller from Trichy East. Her smile said it all -- she is not just a fan of Vijay's acting, but also someone the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader is banking on to trust him to deliver results in this high-stakes Tamil Nadu election. CNN-News18 spoke to people and political leaders in the constituency, who feel that while the traditional voters will continue to vote for the DMK or the NDA alliance in the seat, the youth are far more impressed with Vijay and feel they should give him a chance. "I beg to differ," said Terence, a young voter and a first-time voter. "I think experience is important. That is how governments are run, not by first-timers. So I will vote for the DMK. But others are speaking of Vijay -- let him be. He will not have any impact," he told CNN-News18. But a BCom student, has another take. "Vijay will certainly create such an impact that he will cut through the minority votes and take away Christian and Muslim votes of those who are impressed with him." In the city, the TVK office is yet to fully gear up for the campaign, the flags are yet to dominate the streets, but people feel that there is more to Vijay than just acting. Vijay calls this a "people versus power" fight. As one moves through the crowded lanes of Tiruchirappalli -- with the Rockfort temple looming on one side, the towering gopurams of Srirangam on the other, and the chaos of Gandhi Market in between -- there is a sense that this is no ordinary election. The political temperature here is running higher than the city's summer. "I will vote for Vijay. I am sure he will be a great leader. What happened in Karur was an accident, which he was not responsible for. It has happened when Jayalalitha and MGR also have campaigned that stampedes have taken place, don't blame Vijay for this. Blame him if he does not deliver on this promises," said young student Abdul, who just contributed Rs 10,000 to the TVK funds for this election to ensure a Vijay win. The Trichy East Constituency Trichy East, also known as Tiruchirappalli East, is not a large constituency, but it is socially and politically layered. Spread across 23 corporation wards, it has a total electorate of 2,17,397 voters -- including 1,04,883 men and 1,12,460 women. A sizeable Christian and Muslim population, together making up nearly 35 percent of voters, sits alongside a strong urban middle-class and working-class base. It is this mix that makes the seat both sensitive and strategically important. Historically, the constituency has swung between the DMK and the AIADMK. The AIADMK held it in 2016 riding the Jayalalithaa wave. In 2021, the DMK reclaimed it decisively. The current MLA, Inigo S Irudayaraj, secured over 94,000 votes and won by a margin of more than 53,000. He is also the founder of the Christhuva Nallenna Iyakkam and has built a strong grassroots connect, particularly among Christian communities -- a factor the DMK is banking on once again as it fields him again. The AIADMK has brought in Rajasekaran, a relatively new face with local institutional links, while Naam Tamilar Katchi has fielded Dr Krishnasamy. On paper, this remains a multi-cornered contest. But in reality, the entry of Vijay has changed the nature of the fight. The entry of TVK The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder is not just contesting -- he is attempting to reframe the contest itself. By choosing to contest from both Trichy East and Perambur, both DMK-held seats, Vijay is clearly looking to secure his entry into the Assembly while directly taking on the ruling party. More importantly, he is trying to convert what is essentially a three- or four-cornered contest into a straight political narrative. "It's a two-sided fight between our team and Stalin sir's team," Vijay has said, reducing the role of other players and sharpening the contest against the DMK. His biggest strength remains unchanged -- celebrity appeal. Across Trichy East, particularly among younger voters, there is a visible curiosity and, in some pockets, clear support. Political observers point out that Vijay does not even need to campaign extensively on the ground. His social media reach, fan networks and film legacy are already doing the work of mobilisation. At a time when both the DMK and the AIADMK are seen as struggling to connect with younger voters, this has become a significant advantage. Many voters, especially the youth, appear to be looking beyond the traditional DMK-AIADMK binary. There is a sense of fatigue with the existing political choices -- and in that gap, Vijay is positioning himself as an alternative. Wooing youth "Why not give him a chance?" is a line that comes up often in conversations across the constituency -- driven as much by his on-screen image as by his political messaging. Vijay is also backing this appeal with a clear youth-focused pitch. His manifesto promises unemployment allowance of up to Rs 4,000 per month, interest-free education loans up to Rs 20 lakh, five lakh internship opportunities annually, and financial support for young entrepreneurs. He has framed the election as a "generational shift" -- even calling it a "whistle revolution". The numbers explain the strategy. Tamil Nadu has over 5.67 crore voters, with nearly 12.5 lakh first-time voters and close to 40 percent falling in the 20-40 age group. This is the core base Vijay is targeting, attempting to convert cinematic popularity into political capital. There is already speculation that the TVK could secure around 15 percent vote share, largely from youth, neutral voters and those disillusioned with both the DMK and AIADMK-led fronts. But the questions remain. Can popularity translate into votes? Can a new party build organisational strength in time? And can Vijay's personal appeal extend beyond himself to benefit his candidates across the state? "Why not?" says Devaraj. But he feels that the TVK will make a debut but will not win many seats across Tamil Nadu. However, he says Vijay will certainly give a jolt to senior politicians who have become complacent and rely on legacy politics. "Law and order is an important issue and that will have to be addressed by the people when they cast their vote," said Selvi, a flower seller working near the Chathiram bus stand in the heart of Trichy. For the DMK, the strategy is clear -- rely on its established network, social coalition and the local strength of Irudayaraj. For the AIADMK and others, the fight is to remain relevant in a contest that is increasingly being polarised by Vijay's entry. Trichy East, which has long alternated between the two Dravidian majors, is now seeing, for the first time, a serious attempt to disrupt that pattern. When we spoke to their leaders, they believe the Vijay fight will remain one limited to the silver screen, nothing more. "Vijay is just an actor. He won't have any impact. He is best on screen, we all like him as an actor, but he is not a political force who can make an impact," said a senior leader. Another senior leader from AMMK, Thottiyam MLA M Rajasekaran, who is not directly in the fray but spoke on the Vijay factor, said there is too much hype for the actor, but he will not make an impact. "The youth are highly influenced by him, but voting patterns show that first-timers will not have that kind of impact unless they really work hard on the ground. Vijay has not done that. He is not even a factor," he said. Whether that disruption succeeds or not will only be known when votes are counted.
