Chennai, Mar 30 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin, the fledgling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Founder and actor-politician Vijay and Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NTK) Founder and another actor-direcor Seeman, Ministers and other prominent leaders sre among the 573 candidates who have filed their papers on the opening day of filing of nominations for the April 23 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu on Monday. According to the Election Commission of India update late tonight, a total of 573 nominations were filed. Apart from these three Chief Ministerial candidates of their respective parties, prominent leaders of various political parties also filed their papers before the Returning Officers (ROs) and District Election Officers (DEOs) in their respective constituencies across the State as only a four day window was available to file the papers due to government holidays. While Mr Stalin filed his papers from his stronghold Kolathur constituency in the city, from where he is seeking a record fourth successive term, Vijay, in his maiden electoral foray, filed his papers from the Perambur seat in North Chennai and Seeman from Karaikudi in the southern Sivaganga district. Both Mr Stalin and Vijay instantenously started their election campaign in their respective constituencies after filing their nominations. Mr Stalin would be seeking re-election from Kolathur seat in Chenni city, from where he has secured a hat trick winning the 2011, 2016 and 2021 polls and was eyeing for a record fourth straight victory this time. In fact, he was the only MLA to be elected to the Assembly from this seat, which came into being in 2011 after the delimitation. Into his fourth decade in electoral politics, Mr Stalin would be contesting in his 10th successive Assembly elections, and would be eager to record his eighth win. He had contested the first six polls from the Thousand Lights seat in the city in 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006. Except in 1984 and 1991, he had emerged victorious in the remaining four elections, before switching to Kolathur seat and faced the last three elections and won all of them securing a hat trick in 2011, 2016 and 2021. Talking to reporters after filing his papers and commencing his campaign, Mr Stalin asserted that the voters of Kolathur would re-elect him for a fourth time with a massive margin. He also reiterated that TN was fighting for its rights with Delhi and TN will win in this battle and the DMK-led Front would register a resounding victory. Meanwhile, Vijay, soon after filing his nomination papers in Perambur constituency in North Chennai, launched his poll campaign, drawing surging crowds and charged the DMK with pushing the state on a downward spiral and making women's safety precarious. "For five years Stalin Sir had control of the Police Department. When basic security could not be ensured, why should we not throw this government out of power? With loads and loads of looted cash they will try to bribe you. Take that and blow the "Whistle" (TVK poll symbol) in their ears," he added. All the NTK candidates, including Vetri Tamizhan, who was pitted against Vijay in Permabur, also filed their papers in all the 234 seats in their respective seats on the first day itself as per the directives of the Party Founder. Among the prominent candidates who have filed their nominations on the opening day included Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian (Saidapet), Municipal Administration Minister TVK Election Campaign Management General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna (Villivakkam), former Minister and AIADMK strongman and TVK Organisational Secretary K A Sengottaiyan (Gobichettipalayam), his home turf in Erode district. Considering the short span of time for filing the papers, the process has gained momentum on the very first day itself with candidates of several parties and Independents, making a beeline before the ROs and DEOs in various districts of the State to file their papers.
